Now if I only had some talent

I have a PowerMac G5, but I’m not a typical elitist-zealot who fawns over all things Apple. I don’t like iTunes, I’ve never opened most of their “iApps” more than once, and Safari got replaced by Mozilla on day 1 of ownership. So all this time their curious little Garage Band app just sat around, ignored and unloved.

Anyhow, recently Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails posted a garage band version of The Hand That Feeds for fans to remix or destroy. Whatever pushed me to actually try it I have no idea, but remix and destroy I did …

I hear somebody has already made a “country” version of the song, though I don’t think I’m curious enough to hunt it down. “Country Music” after all is a hell of an oxymoron … :P

Double the fun

Julian and I got “replacement” hamsters a bit over a week ago, and I haven’t had a chance to take pics yet until now. Nice little guys, and much more docile than Gigi is/was. Now if I could only get them to stand still outside the cage for a better shot …

Sticker Shock

I have here in front of me a quote for a server system for my development lab. It has 2TB of storage and is specced out for 99.9999% uptime: 15000rpm disks for the RAID array, dual-redundant power supplies, cabling, and server front-ends, and automatic failover capability if one front-end dies. Short of me walking up to it and whacking it with a baseball bat, it’ll stay up.

The price tag for this box? $75,000

To catch a thief …

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

Here’s something Leonard posted a little while ago but I’ve just gotten around to chasing down. Anyhow, Professor Jasper Rine lectures at UC Berkeley. He recently had his laptop stolen. Unfortunately for the thief, he got a whole lot more than he bargained for.

The webcast from last Friday for his Biology 1A lecture is quite interesting starting at 48:50. Once this guy is caught, he’s in for some major hurt, assuming he hasn’t fled the country first …

And here’s the text version for those of you who don’t like realplayer.
