Being an obsessive parent might be a waste of effort

Saturday, October 29th, 2005

For those parents who are obsessed with their child’s school life anyway. Some interesting stuff to be gleaned from an LA Times article on how parental involvement relates to student achievement. In short: very little.

My mouth hurts like a b*tch

I think my dentist was trying to be cheap today. I had my right set of wisdom teeth cut into pieces and pulled out in the morning, and it was definitely worse than the experience from a few weeks ago. First thing I noticed: less anesthesia. Going into the procedure, the right side of my lips and tongue were less numb, and I had him inject a bit more. So he injected what felt like was only a miniscule amount. And then he got to work drilling and pulling, and I could feel all the cracking and breaking going on between the root and bone of my jaws. Thank goodness for tylenol. And porridge with duck egg and pork. Mmmm.. porridge …

UCLA Engineering Distance Learning

Friday, October 28th, 2005

Looks like the distance learning site for UCLA engineering is live — hard to believe that UCLA is finally going to start it up after years of seemingly half-hearted speculation. From the looks of it, you can “only” get a M.S. degree, but thats probably good enough for most people interested in distance learning anyway. I think I’ll apply, though unfortunately that means I’ll have to actually study for the GRE, as opposed to if I only applied to the school on the other side of LA.

Darn the working life

Its a pretty nice day outside and my mind isn’t entirely here at work. I’d much rather be running around taking pictures. Or cycling, though the sticker-shock of the bike I’m thinking about is making me googly-eyed. DSLR or a nice road bike? Hmm.. damn my expensive hobbies!

Anyhow, here’s some pics from the last photo shoot on campus. All shots taken between 6:30am and 7:30am, before I had to leave for work :(

For those torrent-minded, www.myspleen.net has a tracker going with a bunch of Animaniacs episodes. And some Pinky and the Brain seasons. Pity they don’t have Tiny Toons or any of the old school Disney Cartoons like Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, or the Gummi Bears, but I guess that’d be asking for a bit too much.
