We had Carly Fiorina, Oh Wait …

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Whoever administers Knox College has some great connections. Who did they manage to get for commencement speaker this year? Stephen Colbert. Yep, the guy who wasn’t afraid of skewering the president in his face. I may not be able to stand him for a whole episode of the Colbert Report, but I’d have traded Carly and her “Reality TV” speech for him in all his obnoxious glory any day of the week.

Run/Walk notes

Some random bits from this year’s UCLA Run/Walk:

Volunteer: (to runner) “You can do it!”
Runner: “Hey, you’re in my Chinese class!”

Props to number 1069 and the gaggle of 7-8 year old boys who finished in under 35:00.

The number 1 guy seemed surreal as he sped down the course, long hair flowing in the air. Rex even thought he was attractive.

The race seemed “short” for some reason, and I managed to snag a time around the 21:30-something mark.

My race number was also The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything

The Dell 2005 models were better

Monday, May 15th, 2006

I’ve been playing with the idea of picking up another Dell LCD when the usual deals come around. Not anymore. This thread on the Dell support forums has completely turned me off to the idea. The backlight leakage issues on the 2005fp(x) gets fixed on the latest 2007 models, only to have the worse problem of color banding on gradients.

Instead, it looks like that cash is going to go into DSLR lenses — There’s a 11-22mm which looks rather tasty and would be awesome for landscapes.

Nintendo Wii (click on Fresh Experiences tab)

All I can say is “Wow!”, especially for the Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxies, and Wario Ware parts. Metroid Prime 3 also looks pretty good, though its probably not for me since I got dizzy from playing the first Metroid Prime. No Super Smash Bros game as a launch title, but even then I’m already sold.

Mr. Wii, you now have to compete with Mr. SLR for Sherman’s toy budget …
